The Aboriginal Employment Program mentors and trains Aboriginal people for the construction, hospitality, rail and aviation services industries.
Proudly supported by ATPSL, the Aboriginal Employment Program manages the Koori Job Ready Course and the Yaama Dhiyaan Hospitality Training School that run eight-week training for students and assists them in finding employment.
The program was originally an initiative of the Redfern-Waterloo Authority but now sits under the ATPSL umbrella. Since the program began in 2006, more than 850 employment opportunities have been created for Aboriginal men and women with this number set to increase.
Luke Sainthill (pictured) has been helped by the program and is well on the way to reaching his dream of becoming a project manager by studying a Bachelor of Construction Project Management at University of Technology.
The Aboriginal Employment Program has benefits for both the community and the construction, catering, rail and aviation industries as graduates are equipped with the immediate skills they need to work. Through the eight-week course, students start to build their confidence and start believing that they have a right to a future, with many going on to do apprenticeships and cadetships, like Luke.
