An Australian Christmas for local school kids
What is an Australian Christmas? This is the theme for students from Alexandria Park Community School who have been busy painting for the Eveleigh Market Christmas Banner Competition.
Alexandria Park Community School has won the Christmas Banner Competition for the last two years with students in Year 5 throwing lots of enthusiasm and skill at creating this year’s banner.
“I’ve liked working on both the painting and the design,” says student Ricky. Another student Amy adds: “We have been coming in early and spending our lunch times working on the banner – it’s been lots of fun. I also want to be an artist when I grow up so I have liked working on this project.”
Teacher Bronwyn says the Christmas Banner Competition offers students a great opportunity to work together. “The Christmas Banner Competition has given the whole class the opportunity to get involved with every student in the class taking part. We worked collaboratively on the design with students casting their vote on what design to use and it has allowed students to work as a team. It’s great to see how dedicated the students are and they are obviously really enjoying it.”
The school’s Christmas banner includes Santa surfing on a surfboard, the Redfern logo, the Harbour Bridge, and the beach.
The Christmas Banner Competition is open to local schools and youth groups with the banners being hung at Eveleigh Market from 19 November 2011.The community is encouraged to get involved by voting for the People’s Choice Award which is open until 4 December 2011.
The Winner and People’s Choice Award winner will be announced at Eveleigh Farmers’ Market on Saturday, 10 December 2011, each receiving a prize of $1000. The runners up in each category will receive $500.
Ariana Aljinovic, the Eveleigh Market Manager, is pleased to support such a great community initiative. “The kids use their artistic skills to help create a wonderful Christmas atmosphere at Eveleigh Market with the banners always full of colour and stories to celebrate the festive period. It is also a great chance for the community to join in by voting in the People’s Choice Award by selecting their favourite banner for the school to be in the chance to win.”
