Australian Technology Park is a proud supporter of the Rabbitohs Souths Cares program to give children and young people from Redfern and the surrounding areas the opportunity to take part in a series of health and education workshops to aid social and physical development.
HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2010
Rabbitohs’ players contributed over 1,200 hours to the community through Souths Cares and NRL One Community programs in 2010 including assisting children at school through the Teachers’ Aide Program, Workplace Mentoring and support through other community events such as Gambling Awareness Week, Close the Gap campaign, Tackling Violence and Youth Drug Forums.
Over 750 children attended the ‘One Community Carnival’ at Australian Technology Park Performance Centre to promote the eat well, play well, stay well campaign in 2010 and a footy clinic was held for over 400 children to meet their favourite Rabbitohs’ players and to learn some top footy tips.
The Healthy and Active Lifestyle Program was expanded with the help of Australian Technology Park for all Year 5 and 6 students in the South Sydney region in 2010.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Teachers’ Aide Program
The Teachers’ Aide program currently includes numeracy and literacy programs, healthy and active lifestyles, anti-bullying, positive role models and an achievement program to recognise and reward positive behaviour and successful learning outcomes for the students.
Fourteen players and ambassadors are undertaking specific training with the Department of Education and Training to deliver the program. Some of the schools involved include: Alexandria Park Community School, La Perouse Public School, Green Square School and Matraville Sports High School. Players are rostered to attend each week during the school term throughout the playing season and during pre-season training.
Workplace Mentoring
Souths Cares runs workplace mentoring programs with Indigenous and non-Indigenous employment and training companies in the South Sydney and Coffs Harbour regions. The players involved in the workplace mentoring program deliver workshops and presentations detailing various education and employment strategies including overcoming barriers to work, peer pressure, self-esteem building, cultural awareness and making better life choices.
